These days I mostly try not to write. My life is so full of work and family and weeding. But every now and then, my brain starts to itch and the only way to scratch that itch is writing. This is where you will find my most recent scratchings.

Calamity in the Kitchen: Day 1
Oh I’m so excited that you all actually want to hear me ramble on and on about food, cooking and my own brain’s inner workings! I just wish I had so, so, so much more time. I know I won’t really be able to write a post every day, but we’ll see how she goes. Okay, Day 1! [Caution: The following is a description of one of my ‘cooking frenzy’ days. This is not necessarily to be emulated or envied folks.] I don’t know why I do this to myself. One thing leads to another, and then there I am,…

Dinner Every Night
I found a link recently to a blog that was doing a Home Cooking 101 online class. That’s cool. But it was a lot of money. I just hate the idea that anyone should have to pay to learn how to cook! I was wondering if there are any of you readers who would appreciate more instructive posts on the art of home cooking? It seems like most of you know your way around a kitchen, and have your thang going. But believe me, I would love to go on and on for hours the way I can about How…

Who Is Calamity Jane?
It occurred to me the other day that perhaps not all of you know who Calamity Jane is, or was. Must remedy. Calamity Jane is a legendary American character– cowgirl, rough rider, sharp shooter, rowdy maker and, possibly primarily, epic storyteller. It’s not known actually how much of her wild reputation was in fact pure bunk. Little of it was ever substantiated. Suffice it to say, she was not your typical 19th century woman. I myself was christened Calamity Jane by a co-worker back when I bought my first very own rifle. The name stuck by pen only because in…

Turning Trix
I’ve been using my fabulous new electric cooker, Trixie, to the outmost of his/her potential. Most recently out of the depths came a really great cheesecake! Can you believe that? Well, think about it… cheesecakes like to be baked at a low, even temperature, thus the sometimes used water bath, right? I followed a recipe from a slow-cooker book, sort of. It came out, not the best cheesecake I ever made (that would be the final fulfillment of my lifetime of cheesecake wet dreams thanks to Cooks’ Illustrated’s New York style) but a darn good one. It’s uber creamy, straight…

Heat Index– 106 degrees
Oh yeah, baby. You read that right. The actual temperature is a mere 90.8, but the ‘heat index’ takes humidity into account, the way that ‘wind chill’ takes wind into account. And you Alaskans know how true that difference is. I feel I’ve really turned a corner with the heat though. It happened last weekend when I was sweating buckets in my garden at zenith. Or, at least that’s when I first noticed it. It’s not that I wasn’t hot. It’s not that the heat wasn’t uncomfortable. It’s just that I was okay with it. I guess it’s true with…
