These days I mostly try not to write. My life is so full of work and family and weeding. But every now and then, my brain starts to itch and the only way to scratch that itch is writing. This is where you will find my most recent scratchings.

Calamity in the Kitchen, Day 2: Stretching Your Bird
As you noticed on Day 1, my cooking tends to happen when the Babe is napping. I’ve been really trying to get in the habit of starting dinner during his AM nap, to avoid the heat of the kitchen in the PM. But I can’t seem to get it together. I usually end up: A. blogging if I can ignore the disasterous house, or B. cleaning if I can’t. Day 2 I didn’t make dinner in the morning. Nope. I blogged, remember? I didn’t even get lunch made while he was napping, bad mama. Instead, in a rush after the…

Hello Bright, Shiny World: A Recipe for Sprouted Wheat Bread
After six days of cold/flu-family-fun, the damn thing finally spit me out. Last night I was able to muster a small dent in the madness that is our house right now. ie: I cleaned the kitchen to a fine sparkle. Ahhhh….. And what did I do first thing this morning with my bright, shiny, new self, in my bright, shiny, new kitchen? Why, I made sprouted wheat bread of course! What would you do? This isn’t exactly something that goes along with the theme of every day nitty gritty cooking implicit in my supposed week-long Calamity in the Kitchen idea,…

Well…
These last days have been pretty crummy. I have been keeping track of my cooking, taking photos, and even have three started posts in my draft box. But. For one thing, I’m sick. The whole fam damily has been down with a wicked cold. Hopefully short lived. The 3YO’s only lasted one day, I’m on day 2, and still pretty dumpy looking. At least today my brain feels normal. Y’know how you get that sickie-fog? Even the simplest tasks seem ridiculous? Let alone taking care of two kidlets. I’m sorry to say that the 3YO watched more movies yesterday than…

Value Menu: Whole Chicken
Several of your comments requested help with partial meat weaning. I can really dig this since once you make the switch to free-range, and discover the true cost of meat, you suddenly realize that you simply can’t afford to eat it in Good Ole Boy quantities. A natural limitation if you will. As you know, my kitchen is usually stocked with wild game and fish. But since we’ve run out, it’s time for me to start looking for more local New Orleans alternatives. This whole chicken seemed a good deal at $3/lb, but after all the cooking and picking, the…

Whole Wheat Pasta Rises from the Grave
If you, like I had, have given up on whole wheat pasta thinking it’s all mushy and repulsive, and ain’t never no brand gonna be good, take heart! There are good brands of 100% whole wheat pasta in the world! It’s true! Really, really, I’m not even pulling your leg. There’s not many, but I’ve found two good brands. Not as good as the best white pasta, but very good. Good enough that if no one told you, I bet you wouldn’t notice. One is by Bella Terra, the first time I tried it, on a whim since I had…
