These days I mostly try not to write. My life is so full of work and family and weeding. But every now and then, my brain starts to itch and the only way to scratch that itch is writing. This is where you will find my most recent scratchings.

  • Budgeting

I know it might seem like it’s always “Riana” this and “Riana” that, but she’s really helping me kick myself in the butt lately. I’m impressed by her almost two years of hardly buying anything. What she calls the Slow Years. I’m almost enticed by the extremity of it. But. There’s always a but. I did my own Slow Years (without a name or stated challenge) some ten years back. Lived one summer on, I kid you not, beans, rice, bread, oatmeal and, the big splurge, raisins. Period. Washed our hair in the river, and used moss for TP (works…

  • A Garden! (Sort Of)

(This will be first of many posts, in the process of checking one of the biggies off of my To-Do List– ‘get a space at a community garden’) I’m SOOOOOO excited! I finally have a garden! Sort of. Well, what I have is permission, and help to accomplish a concept. The concept being a new bed at an established community garden. This might not sound like much to you, but to me it looks like the light approaching fast from the end of the tunnel. The idea is to start work this weekend! The bed will be about 4 feet…

  • Baking Bonanza!

As promised by the weatherman, the temperature dipped enormously last night. There was a helluva storm bringing it in too. Even though the sliver of sky I can see from our bed is small, when there’s lightening it flashes white even through my eyelids. I love to lay there with my eyes closed and “see” the lightning, and count till the thunder. Last night though, there was so much of both, you could hardly tell which thunder belonged to which lightning. Impressive storm. And oh the cool it brought! When Hubby first opened the door this morning, cold air sucked…

  • Worm Bin Update

Well, I made my bin. Hooray for me. Kind of anticlimactic though, because according to this knowledgeable looking site, I have to let it “age” before I add the wormies. So I made the bin last week, added a layer of shredded paper, a layer of food, and another of paper. During the week I’ve been throwing more food on top. Unfortunately (or, I guess fortunately for the future success of my worm career) it occured to me that although I remembered reading somewhere about the fluffy product of office paper shredders being the perfect bedding, didn’t it seem wrong…

  • Of Toys and Not Toys

Just saw one of Riana’s old posts with a little video about kids and consumerism. Holy Crapola! I forget how extreme that all is, we lead such a sheltered life. I feel wicked enough setting the toddler down in front of a video once a day (ever since she stopped napping at 1 1/2!) I forget how much of America exposes their little kiddos to several hours a day of commercial laden TV. The toddler doesn’t know yet how bad off she is, with only a few baskets of toys, mostly second hand. She’ll figure it out though, TV or…
